Up to 80% of pregnant women report back pain. It is largely a consequence of posture changing during pregnancy: the growing belly pulls the pelvis forward, the lumbar curve deepens and the muscles along the spine work in constant overload.

Add to that the softening of the ligaments and the extra weight, and it becomes clear why the pain often appears in the second trimester and increases towards the end.

It is not something to wait out. Manual therapy, exercises and a few changes to everyday habits usually make a clear difference — and they also reduce the risk that the pain will persist after birth.
