Pain in the lower back and buttock in pregnancy usually comes from a combination of two things: pressure from the baby moving down towards the lower spine, and the loosening of the ligaments that hold the pelvis together.
The pain often radiates down the back of the thigh and is described as sciatica. In pregnancy it is usually not caused by a disc problem but by tension in the piriformis and the gluteal muscles, which the sciatic nerve passes through.
That distinction matters, because it means manual work on those muscles and correcting the position of the pelvis usually brings relief quickly.
