Swollen limbs in pregnancy

Hormonal changes lower the tone of blood vessel walls, and the growing uterus impedes venous return — hence heavy, swollen legs.

During pregnancy, changes in hormones lower the tone of the walls of blood vessels. Blood volume also rises considerably, while the growing uterus presses on the large veins and impedes return flow from the legs.

The result is swelling, a feeling of heaviness, and sometimes cramps at night. Swelling that appears suddenly, affects the face and hands, or comes with a headache and high blood pressure requires urgent medical assessment — that is a different situation.

For ordinary pregnancy swelling, lymphatic drainage, taping and simple daily habits bring real relief.
