The pubic symphysis is the joint between the two pubic bones, made of cartilage. Under the influence of pregnancy hormones the mobility of the pelvic joints increases, and the symphysis can separate more than usual.
Typical symptoms are pain at the front of the pelvis when walking, turning over in bed, climbing stairs or standing on one leg. Some women describe a clicking or grinding sensation.
Therapy aims to even out tension around the pelvis, take the load off the symphysis and teach movement patterns that do not aggravate it. Taping and a support belt are often helpful.
