An episiotomy is a procedure performed during a vaginal birth. It most often runs down and to the side. The vagina, the perineal muscles and the skin are cut. The stitches may be dissolvable or ordinary ones. Where the perineum tears during birth the procedures are similar, but the event itself is “uncontrolled”. The anal sphincter can be damaged - a serious complication that can cause problems with holding gas or stool. At the site of the wound a woman feels pain, pulling and burning when passing urine. Pain during intercourse can also appear.
