Pregnancy and the postpartum period are when back pain appears most often. In the first weeks after birth it is usually not alarming: it follows from the changes the body went through over nine months.
Even so, physiotherapy is worth having. It improves daily comfort and reduces the pain of feeding, carrying and lifting a baby — activities that are repeated dozens of times a day in positions that are rarely kind to the spine.
Sometimes the pain does not settle. That is common and too often dismissed. The aim of therapy is to remove the cause rather than mask it, and to teach you how to prevent it returning.
